witchcraft index

reading

Organized by subject. Subjects are in alphabetical order.

ásatrú

ásatrú for beginners, by mathias nordvig, phd.
what it says on the tin. well-written and thoroughly researched. notes here.

contemporary

The Green Witch, by Arin Murphy-Hiscock
Overview of herbs and their correspondences. (upload notes; write a better reflection).
The House Witch, by Arin Murphy-Hiscock
Focuses on understanding the home from a spiritual perspective. Too wishy-washy for me.
Weave the Liminal, by Laura Tempest Zakroff
For people who want to define and justify their practice (for themself and others). As I'm currently trying to stick to learning about Wicca and other better-defined practices, I didn't find it useful; abandoned the book.

demons

Demonolatry, by Nicholas Remy
A book about witches and demons, written by a French judge in the late 1500s. Notes and thoughts here.

herbalism

wild witchcraft, by rebecca beyer
notes here.

history

Drawing Down the Moon, by Margaret Adler

memoir

The Witching Year, by Diana Helmuth
The author spends a year and a day exploring witchcraft. Thoughtful reflection on her journey and her complicated feelings about witchcraft. Would recommend to people who like memoirs or want an understanding of witchcraft.
The Wheel, by Jennifer Lane
A burnt-out author attempts to reconnect to her old magical practice. DNF.

misc. supernatural texts

Nixon's Cheshire prophecy at large (here)
Account of a prophecy, with an explanation of where it came true. I'm amused by Oldmixon's account of how Nixon was an idiot.
Svpernatvrall sights and apparitions, by William Lilly
Write-up here.

palmistry

Keiromantia, by Johann Rothmann
A text on palmistry from 1652. Notes here. DNF because I can't stand fortune-telling. Could be useful for doing a study of palmistry over time---what's changed, and what's stayed the same?

qabalah & thelema

The Message of the Master Therion (essay) by Aleister Crowley
Introduction to what "Will" is.
Elements of the Qabalah, by Eliphas Levi
What it says on the tin. Useful breakdown for someone who started reading about Thelema and was immediately overwhelmed by information about the Qabalah.
Living Thelema, by David Shoemaker
Could be renamed Thelema for Dummies. Useful overview; gave me an idea of what Thelema is and what practices are associated with it. Offers a breakdown of how someone new to Thelema can go about learning/practicing it.

reference

Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs
Provides a list of herbs and their correspondences. Invaluable; I'd love a hard copy of this.

spellcraft

Practical Solitary Magic, by Nancy Watson
Focuses on spiritual practices from a psychological perspective. Useful for understanding how magic works. Primarily cites Dion Fortune, Murry Hope, and Israel Regardie. Thoughts here.

wheel of the year

The Year of the Witch, by Temperance Alden
The Modern Witchcraft Guide to the Wheel of the Year, by Judy Ann Nock
Ostara, by Kerri Connor (Llewellyn's Sabbat Essentials)
Handy reference manual. The honey orange cake recipe is definitely worth trying.

wicca

Wicca: A Year and a Day, by Timothy Roderick
My formal introduction to Wicca. Thoughts here.
